What Are The Advantages Of Thin Layer Chromatography?

Image
Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)  is a separation technique used to separate compounds in a mixture. It is based on the principle  of separation through adsorption type. Let us learn about the advantages of Thin Layer Chromatography and compare them with other chromatographic techniques. It is a  cost-effective technique, fast and simple  to use the technique. According to USP 203 Chapter, we can apply 15 samples on one 20x10 cm HPTLC plate. This allows us to simultaneously analyze 15 samples in one go. HPTLC  vs Liquid Chromatography  - Being an open technique, it is robust and does not damage the system as the plates are disposable this gives you an advantage over HPLC. In HPLC, the columns can have a carry-over effect if not cleaned properly. HPTLC is hassle-free and fast. HPTLC vs Gas Chromatography  - Gas chromatography is used to analyze volatile compounds whereas HPTLC is used for non-volatile compounds. HPTLC vs Paper Chromatography  - HPTL...

What are Nutraceuticals?

Image
Nutraceuticals a recent trend in the current health market. They are naturally derived products which are extracted from their original food matrix. They range from isolates, novel foods, products of botanical origin and many. Examples of nutraceutical products are dietary supplements, natural extracts, multi vitamins, fortified dairy products, botanicals and many others. FSSAI has authorized 400 plant extracts to be used as nutraceuticals. How HPTLC can be useful for Nutraceutical Analysis? Identification The first chemical test for any natural or synthetic products is its identification. Botanical origin nutraceuticals, being complex extracts pose a major problem here. However, in USA & Europe “High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprint” is the regulatory technique for the purpose. Nutraceuticals are considered as foods by the FSS Act, 2006. Since they are of botanical origin. HPTLC is the only chromatographic technique suitable for routine quality control by ...

TLC HPTLC PHOTODOCUMENTATION

Image
TLC/HPTLC Photodocumentation High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) is a visual chromatographic technique. What do we mean by the visual approach? The chromatograms, i.e., HPTLC plates, are observed after development. The human eye can see visible spots/bands. If the bands are UV active, we need to observe them under UV. Hence, the HPTLC plate can be visually evaluated, which sets it apart from other chromatographic techniques. The results are monitored and documented. How are the results observed/ documented? HPTLC/TLC results are visual and can be observed by the HPTLC Photodocumentation system. For the HPTLC photodoc, CAMAG has modules such as CAMAG TLC visualizer 2. It has a digital CCD camera. The TLC visualizer electronically captures the high-resolution images of chromatograms under white light, UV 254nm, and under fluorescence. It merges three images to give the best image possible, aided by software-controlled visionCATS for documentation. The software has im...

HPTLC in herbal drug analysis

Herbal drugs are gaining popularity nowadays as it has a reputation of being clean, organic and safe for consumption due to their natural source and ingredients. Herbal drugs are used as supplements. They consist of health systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy and Naturopathy. Herbal medicines/drugs are plant-derived materials with therapeutic and different health benefits for humans, which are acquired or captured from the plants and their part. Any drug before being brought into the market has to be tested and clinical trials have to be taken. Herbal drugs are more prone to adulteration. Many times, it is a polyherbal formulation meaning it is made up of different herbs/ plants. HPTLC is an efficient tool for herbal drug analysis. The herbal matrix is complex in nature and since HPTLC has disposable layers there is no damage to the instrument. Hence, HPTLC is used in herbal drug standardisation. These medicines are prone to adulteration by notorious dealers and...

HPTLC Fingerprinting

High Performance Thin Layer chromatography is a versatile technique with applications in herbals, food, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals.   What is HPTLC Fingerprinting? HPTLC Fingerprinting is the representation of the phytochemical composition of a plant extract or formulation, in the form of an image at 254nm, 366nm and white light. It is a sequence of peaks or zones of a chromatogram specific for a sample. United States Pharmacopoeia definition of HPTLC Fingerprint is “It is the electronic image of the visual HPTLC chromatogram.” HPTLC fingerprint is evaluated based on Rf, colour and relative intensity of bands in the electronic image. For comparison BRM (Botanical Reference Material) is used. If BRM is not available a sample can be collected from the field/market sample is sent to recognized botanical institute e.g., NBRI Lucknow, Agharkar Research Institute Pune, Botanical survey of India western circle Pune. etc. for authentication and that can be used as BRM...

HPTLC Installation training

This blog will cover the installation training process which is done right after the system is installed by our service team.  Post installation done by service engineers, to use the instrument for performance is taught by specially trained application specialists from Anchrom. HPTLC installation training is an important step to educate the analyst and operators to use the system for their specific purpose. The training duration depending on the configuration of HPTLC system is given for one day to one week. Anchrom provides two types of HPTLC training. First one is Installation training which is given right after the system is installed. Another one is on-site training which is provided on request of customers. After discussion with Anchrom & customer, a mutually convenient date is fixed and an official setup is done with email communication. Post this, our specialized trained application specialists visit the customers lab for the training. Firstly, the lab che...
